Using a Flow Chart to Keep Students on Track

Social Studies teacher Bobby Shaddox and his students at King Middle School use flowcharts to stay on track during research-based writing. This is an excerpt of a two-part series on Scaffolding Research-Based Writing with Sixth Graders.

- We have the research process for this expedition up here on the board, right? It’s a flowchart. And I added this flowchart to help us all see where we are. I used flowcharts to see where students were at in the research and writing process. It also gave me a tool to help me know which students needed support. What was it called?

- How dare the Taliban take away my basic rights.

- Did that relate to the challenge?

- Yeah.

- So did we find our action?

- Yeah. Thank you.

- No problem.
