This list includes all the materials needed to effectively implement the K-2 Labs for grade 2.

Note that many of the items on this list (e.g., cardboard, feathers) may already be available in a school building, and also are easy to purchase at local crafts or hobby stores.

Grade 2, Module 1

Materials

  • Colored pencils or crayons (one set per student)
  • Clipboard (one per student; optional)
  • Mirror (one per student and one for teacher modeling)
  • Rulers (one per student or a cup of rulers per workstation)
  • Work station materials (modeling clay, common kitchen materials and safe cooking utensils, felt or magnet boards)
  • Building blocks (one set of wood or linking blocks)
  • Whiteboard (x6)
  • Dry erase markers (x32)
  • Hand or Finger Puppets (several to share)
  • Watercolor paints (sets for groups)
  • Dress-up Materials (assortment of regular items including fun pieces of fabric, dress shirts, ties, bags, glasses, costume jewelry, etc.,
  • plus a few specific items like lab coat and stethoscope, tool belt and hardhat, fire hat, police badges)
Grade 2, Module 2

Materials

  • Air dry clay (class set; for teacher modeling and divided into containers for each workstation)
  • Skewers (one for teacher modeling; several per student)
  • Toothpicks (one for teacher modeling; several per student)
  • Large, shallow plastic containers, 40-60 quart capacity (one to model; one per lab group, if possible)
  • Plaster mix (to create the dig site; amount varies)
  • Sand (to create the dig site; amount varies)
  • Chisel (2-3 to share in the Explore Lab)
  • Small hammers (2-3 to share in the Explore Lab)
  • Paintbrushes (several to share in the Explore Lab; variety of sizes)
  • Toothbrushes (several to share in the Explore Lab)
  • Tweezers (several to share in the Explore Lab)
  • Magnifying glasses (several to share in the Explore Lab)
  • Plastic forks (several to share)
  • Plastic knives (several to share)

  • Birdseed (8-10 lb bag)
  • Cotton balls (one per student)
  • Fabric swatches (approximately 3 inch by 3 inch squares; 4 -5 different fabrics; one set per workstation)
  • Velcro (one 3 inch by 3 inch square per workstation)
  • Feathers (one per pair)
  • Pipe cleaners (several to share)
  • Flour (yellow-colored; one cup to share)
  • Q-tips (several per student)
Grade 2, Module 4

  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • Tissue paper (optional)
  • Feathers (optional)
  • Planters (cups/pots/or small piece of land)
  • Butcher block or bulletin board paper - one per student
  • Soil Seeds for local pollinator plants
  • Some young or mature pollinator plants
