"The articles and speeches included in this book provide a glimpse of [Kurt] Hahn and the schools he founded. They help describe Outward Bound's journey from long course to short course and back again."

    –from the Introduction to Roots

This anthology explores EL Education's roots in the educational philosophy of Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound. Hahn started two schools and inspired many other educational initiatives. The book includes an excellent essay on Hahn's educational thought, "The Only Mountain Worth Climbing," by Tom James, and the transcript of a speech on the educational contributions of Outward Bound, "The Missing Dimension," by Paul Ylvisaker.
