Before you analyze specific modules or lessons at a particular grade level, it's important to become acquainted with the yearlong overview documents. The content of this page begins with the Curriculum Plan for a bird's-eye view of the Grades 3–5 Curriculum or Grades 6–8 Curriculum. This is followed with the individual grade-level Curriculum Maps. These maps can be used to help teachers and teams understand not only how each module builds on the preceding module, but also when and how often each standard is assessed. The maps also provide an opportunity to identify content connections. Lastly, this page focuses on the Foundations of Reading and the Common Core Interventions documents, which complete the picture of reading instruction and the Grades 3–8 Curriculum.

You will learn to locate a Curriculum Plan (grades 3–5 or 6–8), Curriculum Map (grade level), the Foundational Reading and Language Standards Resources Package for Grades 3–5, and Common Core Interventions for Adolescent Readers.

Take a moment to visit the Common Core Success website to practice downloading the yearlong curriculum documents listed below that pertain to your grade level(s). You may return to the video above for additional support navigating the site. You will use these files in the “Explore” section of this PLP, so keep the files open once you locate them.

Questions to Guide Exploration

You will now have an opportunity to explore your grade level’s materials more deeply by answering questions about each of the overview documents. If you are struggling to locate your grade level’s overview documents, remember that they can be found on the Resources page of the Common Core Success website. As you read the overview documents, answer the questions below.

Curriculum Plan (grades 3–5 or 6–8): 

  1. What are the similarities and differences between the module materials for each of the grade levels represented on this plan? 
  2. How many module choices does your grade level have? 
  3. How will this document support you in implementing the Common Core Standards?

Curriculum Map (individual grade levels):

  1. What is the central text and focus of each of the modules taught at your grade level? 
  2. What mid- and end of unit assessments are included in your grade level’s modules, and how do these assessments compare to the performance tasks? 
  3. How will this document support you in implementing the Common Core Standards?

Foundational Reading and Language Standards Resource Package for Grades 3-5:

  1. What is the purpose and structure of this document? In other words, why is this document included as a resource, and how does each “tab” or “chapter” support that purpose? 
  2. How will this document support you in implementing the Common Core Standards?

Common Core Interventions for Adolescent Readers (grades 6-8):

  1. What is the purpose and structure of this document? In other words, why is this document included as a resource, and how does each “tab” or “chapter” support that purpose?
