Because the modules follow the "backward design" curriculum approach, it is crucial to understand the big picture before digging into the lesson-level details. In order to see the big picture, you first need to be able to locate all relevant materials and resources. With time, as with any skill, you will improve and be able to locate exactly what you need, when you need it. This page will provide with you multiple opportunities to explore the curriculum and help you get familiar with navigating the curriculum website. These are critical first steps in preparing to teach the modules.

Learning Target

I can locate and describe the most appropriate curricular materials to support my planning process.

Watch: Accessing the Curriculum

Watch the video Accessing the Curriculum to learn about the three ways to access the curriculum via the Common Core Success website. You may already have printed materials. That is great! It is also helpful to have access to Word.doc files that you can modify for students or annotate to support your instruction. Those can be located within this website.

Watch: Preparing a Fifth-Grade Lesson

In the video Preparing a Fifth-Grade Lesson you will see and hear a think-aloud from a fifth-grade ELA teacher navigating the Common Core Success website to find the materials needed to teach a lesson.

Explore: Common Core Success Website

The scenarios below will help you explore our curricular materials on the Common Core Success website. First, read each of the scenarios and think about the most appropriate route to access the materials you need to support your planning. Then, check your understanding by locating the materials online.

Scenario 1: During summer professional development sessions, you meet with the English Language Arts department to plan your curriculum for the year. What are the most appropriate materials to bring to these sessions, and how will you access them?

Scenario 2: During a spring budget meeting, you and your administrative team create a list of texts and materials to purchase. What are the most appropriate materials to bring to this meeting, and how will you access them?

Scenario 3: While meeting with the science department, you learn that your school has received a grant to create an in-depth investigation on local frog species. How can you use the Common Core Success website to identify which grade levels have content connections, and in which module?

Scenario 4: It is early September and you are preparing to launch Module 1. What are the most appropriate materials to use in planning, and how will you access them?

Scenario 5: You are in the middle of implementing Unit 1 of Module 2. You meet with your teaching team to determine which co-teaching models to use for the next week’s lessons. What are the most appropriate materials to bring to this meeting, and how will you access them?

Dig Deeper

For in-depth information regarding each of the documents that comprise the curriculum, and its purpose, be sure to review Preparing to Teach a Module (download from this page). This document will guide the reader through each important resource and provide suggestions for preparing to teach.

Visit this page to learn more about ordering curriculum materials and books. Here you may purchase printed versions of curriculum materials, student consumables, and the central texts for each module, as well as multiple leveled texts from the Recommended Reading lists that can be used for research and independent reading.
