K-5 Language Arts Curriculum: K-2 Labs

How do the K-2 Labs support and extend student learning?

Created By

EL Education

The K-2 Labs support and extend student learning from the Module Lessons. They are designed to help teachers ensure that all of their students get the time to play and explore, become immersed in oral language and content knowledge, and practice skills and habits of character that they need—both to live joyfully and to be fully successful and proficient.

Labs are one hour long and support Module Lessons. These two hours of content-based literacy instruction are complementary, working together to accelerate the achievement of all students.  Each component of the K-2 curriculum honors the characteristics and needs of primary learners, but the Labs, in particular, are designed to bring the Characteristics of Primary Learners to life in powerful ways for our youngest learners.

"My students have been deepening their content knowledge, academic vocabulary and collaboration skills while having a blast every day. Labs are the highlight of their day, and it has been amazing to see them transform into content experts during this time!” Annie Holyfield, Grades K–1 Teacher, Denver
