ELVS20: Silverberg Leadership Award - Dr. Diamond Ford
Dr. Diamond Ford is the winner of this year’s Silverberg Leadership Award, which honors one excellent school leader each year. The 2020 award is presented by William Haithcock, the winner of last year's award.
In accepting this award at the EL Education 2020 Virtual Summit, Dr Ford describes the experience as a young black student in Atlanta in the 1980s, and the choice to wear her hair in its natural state. “Like my curly hair, this risk was bold, unique, and non-conforming,” explains Dr. Ford. So too was she when opening Michael R Hollis Innovation Academy in 2016, adopting the EL Education curriculum and school model.
“When you choose to consistently straighten and weaken your inherently natural and resilient leadership capabilities, you'll get the same results you've always gotten. I chose to be authentic, to be bold, to go with the “curly” and unpredictable twists and turns.”
