Critique Protocol

Adapt this protocol for use with students or staff to when others are presenting work for feedback. Ensure that a classroom/staff culture of respect is in place to support successful use of this protocol.

Roles

  • Facilitator
  • Timekeeper
  • Presenter(s)
  • Participants

Ground Rules

  • Begin by noting the positive
  • Offer constructive probing questions and comments
  • Personalize critique with “I” statements such as
    • “I think…”
    • “I wonder…”
    • “I noticed that…”
    • “I noticed that…”
  • Be specific
  • Remember, you are assessing the work, not the person or the team

Be Kind * Be Specific * Be Helpful

Total time: 15-20 minutes

1. Initial presentation of ideas (Only presenter speaks - up to 4 minutes)

  • Include questions the presenter would like the participants to focus on

2. Participants ask clarifying questions (Participants ask and presenter answers - up to 2 minutes)

  • Participants ask questions for clarification purposes only. Presenter should be able to answer with yes, no, or a single sentence.

3. Participants share warm feedback (Only participants speak - up to 3 minutes)

  • Participants provide positive feedback, observing ground rules

4. Participants share cool feedback (Only participants speak - up to 3 minutes)

  • Participants provide helpful observations, observing ground rules

5. Presenter responds (Only presenter speaks – up to 2 minutes)

  • Presenter highlights key feedback that provided insight

6. Open dialogue (Final 3-5 minutes)

  • The goal is for the presenter to be clear about next steps to take as a result of the critique process
