As part of a study of World War II, high school students created a professionally-published book honoring the service of local WWII veterans in Dubuque, Iowa. The book includes background history and maps about the war as well as personal stories and photos of the service of the veterans. It is informational and narrative both—telling the stories of engagement with quotes and personal perspectives. The book also includes personal reflections from the student authors describing how the process of writing the book changed them as scholars and people.

Students solicited funds from local businesses to publish a high- quality book that was distributed across the city to honor these heroes.
