Eight grade students were involved in an interdisciplinary study about energy and design. They built robots and engaged in agility competitions in teams. They created originally-designed windmills, following material and design constraints, and competed to generate maximum electricity output.

For the culminating project they designed devices with innovative power generation that could be useful in a developing nation. Since a substantial percentage of the school is comprised of recent refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa, this was more than a distant theoretical exercise.

Students presented their designs and the rationale for the need for their invention in a formal presentation to a panel of community experts. They received critique on their designs and on the feasibility and marketability of their inventions.
