Card 22 - Rainbow of Religion

From the Models of Excellence Project Card Collection

Topic

Grade Level

8th Grade
Four Rivers Charter Public School
Greenfield, MA

Eighth grade students at this rural school, in a study of history, diversity and faith, interviewed leaders from twelve different faiths to create a book celebrating their differences and their common ground. Each leader was audiotaped and students created transcripts of the interviews in order to create narratives that were true to the perspectives of the leaders.

Rather than focus simply on the structures of the different faiths, students discussed questions of universal human meaning – why we are here; where we came from – and interviewed the leaders about how their faith addresses such questions.

Students were most intrigued by similarities in the visions and viewpoints of the leaders. In a world where religious differences are often the source of discrimination, oppression and war, students found much in common among disparate faiths.
