The field guide was part of a larger learning expedition that included work with local experts, research, data collection and mapping of the bay.

Each student researched and drew a scientific illustration of a distinct organism. Fieldwork included snorkeling in the freezing waters of the bay with underwater cameras to capture photos to use as models for their illustrations, as well as observations at the local aquarium for organisms they were not able to photograph in the wild.
