High school students in Portland, Maine, in a school with a substantial portion of students who are recent refugees to the U.S., led a project to tell the stories of new Americans. They studied the challenges of international refugees created by human rights abuses, and interviewed local students and adults who were refugees from countries in crisis.

The stories of these refugees were told in photo essays and first- person written memoirs, displayed in a museum exhibition. The exhibition was installed in a local art gallery with a grand opening featuring oral presentations of the narratives.

The project built bridges between students and the local community, and also among the students themselves as they built understanding of the courage and spirit of their fellow students who were refugees.
