Card 11 - A Guide to Adolescence by Adolescents

From the Models of Excellence Project Card Collection

Topic

Grade Level

7th and 8th Grades
Vergennes Middle School
Vergennes, VT

Seventh and eighth grade students created a field guide, a “user’s manual,” to the adolescent body and mind as a service for sixth graders. The finished book is a large laminated resource, ring bound, so that pages on different topics can be removed and used separately.

Over 80 middle school student researchers/authors met regularly with adult medical school students, who served as teachers, sympathetic listeners and expert editors as the younger students built understanding of sensitive issues and wrote about them in plain and clear language.

The guide addresses physical changes; social and emotional changes; and risk factors/lifestyle choices. The content is similar to a health class curriculum but the depth of learning and maturity was much deeper because the students were doing this project, with expert guidance, as a service for others.
