WHEELS' Graham Johnson Honored by American Academy of Arts and Letters
Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) is an NYC Outward Bound School.
Our hearts are singing with congratulations for WHEELS music teacher Graham Johnson, who has just been awarded the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Presidential Citation!
From the Academy: The Presidential Citation, which acknowledges achievement in the nurturing of the arts at a New York City public school, is accompanied by an honorarium of $10,000. It will be awarded to Mr Johnson on November 9, 2017. Yehudi Wyner, president of the Academy, stated “As a fellow musician I am thrilled to learn of Mr. Johnson’s work with our young people and pleased to be able to honor him with this recognition.”
Graham has been teaching at WHEELS since 2010, and is also one of EL Education’s Fund for Teachers alumni. In 2013, Graham and his teammate studied “the concept of clave, the fundamental rhythm in some styles of Latin music.[...] We took music lessons with experts in the fields of Latin and jazz music, observed master music teachers, studied music literature, and attended concerts. We improved our musical and pedagogical skills, and deepened our knowledge of Latin music and culture.”
Congratulations to Graham and WHEELS for this remarkable recognition!
