MELS students and teachers are in the news for their study of trees and wildlife on the abandoned Rockaway Beach Rail Line.

The afterschool group is tracking native and invasive species in the 3.5 mile stretch. Many are hoping this land will become a park, and the students’ findings may well end up shaping its development.

Evan O’Connell is a global studies teacher at MELS and one of the teachers shepherding the project. “I wanted to do an afterschool project in collaboration with The Trust for Public Land and the QueensWay that would expose our students to the project and would also engage them in a meaningful way so they could inform the project. It’s such a great educational opportunity for us ... We’ll be using the information as a way to inform what the landscape architects might do in this part of the park.”
