Laura Lee Stockdell, director of school counseling and advisement at Meadow Glen Middle School, has been named South Carolina Middle School Counselor of the Year by the Palmetto State School Counselor Association.

Stockdell worked with former U.S. Army drill sergeant Matthew Adkins to implement a Military Mentor Program at Meadow Glen that helps teach students about resilience, character and professionalism as part of the school's EL Education curriculum.

"I have never seen her react negatively to a situation, and her reactions are always guided by that student advocate role that she holds as a top priority," the former Army drill sergeant wrote in a letter nominating Stockdell for School Counselor of the Year. "I have come to know Mrs. Stockdell as an educator and an advocate for her students who is open-minded, compassionate, dedicated and enthusiastic about her work."

Stockdell's award marks the second statewide recognition of excellence Meadow Glen Middle School has received this school year. Meadow Glen's principal, Dr. Bill Coon, was named Middle School Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
