New York – November TK, 2015 - EL Education has announced that Dr. Lisa Wing, Principal of Genesee Community Charter School (GCCS) in Rochester, NY, has received the Silverberg Leadership Award in recognition of her leadership and management skills that have resulted in the successful implementation of EL Education pedagogy and culture. She received the award at EL Education’s National Conference in San Diego last week.

The Silverberg Leadership Award, created by EL Education Board Member and Treasurer Irwin Silverberg, is given to an exemplary school leader who has impacted student achievement outcomes through deep implementation of EL Education practices. The award comes with a $5,000 cash prize and an invitation to present a workshop at the 2016 National Conference.

In accepting the award, Dr. Wing noted that “our work matters when we teach children that their work matters, and that they have voices they can raise up to change the world.”

She added that EL Education expeditions contribute to this work, noting that they provide “tasks and experiences that have meaning and purpose, and that require perseverance and collaboration in addition to basic skills. Expeditions make possible those little moments that tell us we’re really making a difference in children’s lives that will endure long after the cymbal clash of test scores fades.”

GCCS teachers who nominated Dr. Wing praised her commitment to her staff and students. “Whether it is a kindergartener needing to practice socialization skills, a third grader tackling fractions concepts, or a sixth grader working on script for her final portfolio presentation of the year, Dr. Wing makes a point of being involved in the lives of our students and instilling in them a culture of quality and high expectations,” they wrote.

A GCCS parent added: “Dr. Wing has my deepest gratitude for daring to dream something as bold and enduring as GCCS,” demonstrating “commitment to leadership in education in the face of great odds.”
