EL Education teacher Sydney Chaffee Named 2017 National Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Sydney Chaffee, a ninth grade humanities teacher at Codman Academy Charter Public School, an EL Education Credentialed school.
We extend our deepest appreciation and admiration for this amazing achievement to Sydney and Codman Academy staff and students.
The honor was bestowed by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and announced exclusively on CBS This Morning on April 20, 2017. “I want my students to understand that they are powerful and can make change in the world--that whatever the future is they want to see, they have the power and agency to make that happen.”
In a WBUR radio interview, Sydney added: “For me, education is a tool for social justice. We arm students to fight for the world that they want, and we arm them to fight for justice.”
In addition to being a stellar teacher, Sydney shared her expertise nationally by contributing to the design of EL Education’s highly-rated, open-source English Language Arts curriculum.
This national recognition for Codman Academy and Sydney adds to the growing list of EL Education teachers, leaders, and schools recognized for their achievements. Since 2013, 17 EL Education teachers and leaders have been honored as the best in their craft at the local, state, or national level.
