NEW YORK (2/11/21)—In its review of EL Education’s Language Arts Curriculum, EdReports.org (EdReports), a national nonprofit that independently reviews instructional materials, scored the middle school curriculum with the highest “green” rating in every category. The new review, the first to be conducted using the organization’s updated, more rigorous tool, makes EL Education’s K-8 Language Arts one of just a few “all green” curriculums.

The EdReports review of EL Education Grades 6-8 Language Arts Curriculum (Second Edition) curriculum adds to a growing body of evidence of its high quality and impact on teacher practice and student achievement.

“All students deserve access to standards-based, content-rich, culturally affirming curriculum. Our curriculum imbues more than 25 years of EL Education’s experience in literacy instruction that inspires educators and sparks students’ excitement for learning. This new rating is a testament to our mission to create classrooms where teachers can fulfill their highest aspirations and students achieve more than they think possible,” said Scott Hartl, President and CEO of EL Education.

According to a study conducted by the RAND American Instructional Resources Survey (AIRS) Project, the most commonly required curricula in 2018-19 were not standards-aligned. A free open educational resource, the EL Education K-8 Language Arts curriculum integrates social-emotional learning, follows the science of how students learn to read, and ensures all students have access to complex texts so they learn to read, write, and think at their grade level and beyond.

“Teachers are loving the topics and texts. I’ve never heard so many unsolicited excited comments. They say the texts are more representative of their students, and they feel that their students are going to be able to better connect with the texts and see the relevance to their own lives,” reports a school leader.

The second edition EL Education Grades 6-8 Language Arts Curriculum (Second Edition) was released in July 2020 and is available at Curriculum.Eleducation.org. Thousands of educators have given EL Education’s curriculum their stamp of approval, downloading it more than 12 million times. EL Education’s newly rated 6-8 second edition curriculum has earned more than 73,000 views online by users in its launch year alone.

EdReports’ diverse group of highly-trained educators evaluated and scored the curriculum against detailed criteria for three gateways: (1) Text Quality and Complexity and Alignment to the Standards with Tasks and Questions Grounded in Evidence (2) Building Knowledge with Texts, Vocabulary, and Tasks and (3) Usability.
