EL Education Appoints New Executive Leaders for the Organization's Next Era of Growth
New York, 2/2/21—EL Education, a leading national education nonprofit, has appointed Christina Brown, M.Ed., as Chief Partnerships Officer and Amy Power Bailey, M.Ed., as Chief Content Officer. Brown and Power Bailey will help lead EL Education’s next phase of growth to ensure that every child has access to an anti-racist education that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and passion to create a more equitable and just world.
Ms. Brown brings more than 25 years of experience in education as a teacher and school leader across the K-12 spectrum, in addition to serving as a leader for education organizations. Ms. Power Bailey has been with EL Education for eight years, serving in multiple leadership roles. Among her many important contributions to the organization, Power Bailey initiated EL Education’s district curriculum partnerships business line.
Ms. Brown will join EL Education in February, 2021 and oversee the Business Development Department and the Partnership Departments, including more than 50 expert coaches leading professional learning in 18 districts and more than 140 schools across the country. “As a founding teacher of an EL Education (then “Expeditionary Learning”) school in Boston in the 1990s, I am honored to return to my EL Education roots as Chief Partnerships Officer for EL Education,” notes Ms. Brown. “The EL Education model has always been a north star representing what it means to center the humanity and meaningful work of students and their teachers as they engage in the journey of learning together.”
In her most recent role as a Partner at TNTP, she led the organization’s work on equity and culturally responsive teaching in addition to overseeing multiple partnerships and grants. Previously, Ms. Brown worked at the Center for Collaborative Education for nearly a dozen years. As the Senior Director for Instruction and Assessment, her responsibilities included leading the Principal Residency Network and the Quality Performance Assessment network, among other projects. She has spoken, led professional learning, and written widely on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Data-Driven Instruction, Quality Performance Assessment, Project-Based Learning and Literacy, and Educational Equity for Students of Color, among other topics. Ms. Brown holds an Ed.M. in Language and Literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and National Board Teacher certification in Early Adolescent English Language Arts.
Ms. Amy Power Bailey brings a multitude of strengths and experience to her new position. She first joined EL Education as Lead Professional Development Specialist in 2013—developing the foundational practices that underlie EL Education’s growing district portfolio—and went on to design and implement the organizational strategy and business line, devising philanthropic strategy, creating business models, and serving as a spokesperson for EL Education’s values. Over the course of this work, she is the primary leader responsible for developing EL Education’s reputation as a phenomenally responsive curriculum partner to districts such as Detroit Public Schools Community District, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Richmond Public Schools, Oakland Unified School District, and more than a dozen others, providing the highest quality of service and growing this business from its beginnings to more than $15 million per year in philanthropic and earned revenue. Over the past year, Ms. Power Bailey added oversight of the team leading school-focused partnerships to her portfolio.
Ms. Power Bailey previously led students and educators as a teacher, reading specialist, assistant principal and district administrator in New York and Florida. She has a BS degree in Secondary English Education, Advanced Certification in K-12 Reading, and an M.Ed in Educational Administration. She holds school administrator certification in both Florida and New York.
