Mabel Alvarez, EL Education’s Manager for Strategic Planning, has been recognized as the 2020 Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award winner!

EL Education recognizes Mabel’s crew spirit, high-quality work, and dedication to the mission. Her nominees describe her as “fearless,” a "champion of equity” who “finds the pathways to nourish and breathe life into our work”—and the very embodiment of what the Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award seeks to honor.

“I’ve never worked with a person so open and willing to connect from the heart and spirit while doing the work. She’s both professional and personal at the same time, in a way that makes people feel seen, valued, and loved.”

The Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award was established in 2010 by the EL Education Board of Directors to honor staff who demonstrate excellence, collaboration, and perseverance and illustrate our commitment to serve as “crew, not passengers.” A committee of peers selects each year’s honoree based on nominations that highlight the work habits and character of candidates.

Highlights from Mabel’s nomination letters:

  • On perseverance“Mabel’s ability to move the work despite the challenges of the moment, despite the competing priorities shows a level of perseverance that would frustrate and crush the determination of those without Mabel’s spirit and resolve.”
  • On collaboration“Like water, Mabel provided the gentle, nourishing spirit in her collaboration. She brought vision, purpose, and joy to all of our collaborations in the project.”
  • On leadership“Mabel is a champion for equity for all students and a visionary for what is possible.”

Mabel came to EL Education as a Project Associate in 2014 and Mabel is now EL Education’s Manager for Strategic Planning. Mabel is also on the DEI Advisory Crew and is the joyous host of Crew Conversation virtual gatherings.

As a member of the first EL Education Board of Trustees, Brooks Thomas made significant contributions to the organization’s growth and success. The award is named in honor of his commitment to education and a deep belief in EL Education’s vision for experiential education.

Congratulations to our partner in Crew, Mabel Alvarez!
