Genie Kang, a School Designer in the Northeast Region, has been recognized as the 2020 Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award Winner! She will be honored at a reception hosted by EL Education’s Board of Directors in New York City on June 16, 2020.

The Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award was established in 2010 by the EL Education Board of Directors to honor staff who demonstrate excellence, collaboration, and perseverance and illustrate our commitment to serve as “crew, not passengers.”

Genie first came into the EL Education crew when she was a master-level teacher at the Duggan Middle School, and EL Education Network school in Springfield, MA. She later joined the staff as a school designer in 2014.

Genie is being honored for her “exemplary skills as a facilitator” and “her deep compassion and commitment to crew and equity work.” Genie’s contributions represent much of the core of who EL Education is as an organization.

Highlights from Genie’s nomination letter:

  • On her crew spiritWhen we consider what it looks like to uphold an ethic of crew not passengers, sometimes we need someone who will push against the existing culture, push against our ego in order to help us become a better version of ourselves. This is something that Genie has been doing as she has been a leader in shifting the way equity resides within our organization and in the broader world of education.
  • On high-quality workSince her time as an EL Education teacher, Genie has focused on high-quality work. Genie’s expertise with scaffolding work for her students ensured that all of them produced work they were proud of.
  • On her impactGenie truly is a significant drop of water in our organization. The impact of her words, actions, and presence ripple outward to EL staff, to school teams, and to students.

As a member of the first EL Education Board of Trustees, Brooks Thomas made significant contributions to the organization’s growth and success. The award is named in honor of his commitment to education and a deep belief in EL Education’s vision for experiential education.

Congratulations to our partner in crew, Genie Kang!
