Casco Bay Students on Second Year of Service in Detroit
Juniors volunteer time and effort as part of a yearly service trip.
For the second year in a row, Casco Bay High School students have spent a spring week in Detroit, volunteering in this city 800 miles from home.
“It’s very difficult to capture what’s going on in Detroit and other parts of the country just in the classroom,” said Martha Thompson. “I think it really matters to go out into the actual community.”
It can be tricky to do authentic service in other cities, but Casco Bay has been working with Recovery Park, a local non-profit “with the vision that Detroit can have a new future with local, live foods as the basis for walkable neighborhoods.” So when students are helping to clear a vacant field, they know their work matters.
