We’re excited to announce the theme of Expeditionary Learning’s 2014 National Conference - Independence: Preparing Leaders of Their Own Learning.  The conference will be held at the Boston Sheraton Hotel Sunday, December 7th through Tuesday, December 9th. Pre-Conference Day will be on Saturday, December 6th.

To build a better future, we need to equip students with the independent skills for college, career and civic life. That’s why the Common Core State Standards cite independence as the first disposition of college and career readiness.  Long before the Common Core State Standards raised the importance of independence, Expeditionary Learning schools have been supporting students to be self-reliant, innovative and to persevere – to be leaders of their own learning.  Today, Expeditionary Learning’s Common Core curriculum and resources place independent, productive struggle with challenging text at the heart of learning.

The theme will allow us to showcase the curricular, instructional and assessment practices, and the community structures, that motivate students to work hard, develop the self-sufficiency they need to own their own learning, and compel them to use their learning to contribute to a better world.
