Milwaukee Environmental Sciences Academy (MESA), a charter school of the Milwaukee Teacher Education Center (MTEC), is a year-round education charter school, serving grades K4 through 8th grade. MESA is an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school that provides students with a holistic program of learning and development, with an emphasis on environmental sciences and healthy lifestyles in line with the Common Core and Wisconsin State Standards.
MESA Teachers demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving results through the creative use of resources, involving parents in the education process, integrating Expeditionary Learning model practices, rigorous academic programs and targeted interventions so students become self-directed learners prepared for college and career success.
Successful candidates will have strong skills in the following areas:
Establishing a positive learning environment and classroom management
Reader’s and writer’s workshop model and balanced literacy instructional strategies
Passion for science, environmental themes and guiding inquiry-based “learning expeditions”
Establish a classroom culture that is safe, collaborative and intellectually challenging for all students;
Develop units of study that align State Standards and Expeditionary Learning practices to promote students’ in-depth understanding, critical thinking and achievement;
Assist in monitoring and supervising effective classroom and school-wide structures that
promote positive student behavior and safety;
Maintain an orderly, academically-focused classroom environment and effective management of instructional materials and records;
Frequent communication with students and families to provide clear information about progress;
Utilize effective practices for community building, including rituals and traditions that build a
safe, inclusive, and respectful environment.
Utilize authentic formative and summative assessments to gauge learning, guide instruction, and provide timely feedback to students;
Participate in regular and ongoing professional development efforts and working collaboratively with grade band/level planning to constantly improve professional practice;
Participate fully and positively in a staff culture and the relentless pursuit of our mission;
Work cooperatively with grade level and the school team in all areas of instruction, assessment, documentation, parent/guardian involvement, and classroom management.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree required;
Valid Wisconsin Teacher’s License;
Formal teaching experience in an urban setting preferred and/or EL preferred;
Possess strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to collaborate with a team;
Ability to work collaboratively with staff, families, and community members from diverse backgrounds;
Ability to be creative, resourceful, and reflective;
Commitment to educational excellence and high expectations.
