ABOUT THE POSITION
EL has gained national recognition as an organization providing high quality K-8 curriculum and professional development on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The Curriculum Designer Grades K-5: English Language Development (ELD) will work as part of a team to design and write high quality engaging curriculum that integrates English language development and content-based literacy for Grades K-5. A curriculum designer with ELD expertise will serve as an embedded member of a grade level team to build aligned content for a new ELD block. This position represents an exciting opportunity for individuals who have:
Have proven experience working with English language learners and designing content for ELD time, specifically in the primary and elementary grades
Have a deep understanding of the CA ELD standards
Understand diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism and culturally responsive education as it pertains to curriculum design
We seek 6 curriculum designers with ELD expertise total to begin in July 2021 and finish in February 2023, working 40 hours per week. Work will be paid at an hourly rate.
This position will report to the Director of Curriculum Design, and will:
Participate in virtual professional learning with our experts, and also potentially in person over the course of the project.
Support the backward design, writing, and revision of one-hour daily lessons for multiple levels of English language proficiency aligned to four content-based literacy modules at a given grade level.
Create teacher guides detailing instruction for multiple levels of proficiency for English language learners, and clearly integrating EL Education’s three dimensions of student achievement: mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality work.
Create unit and module level documents consistent with the core curriculum documents outlining the content and how it is aligned with the core curriculum.
Ensure consistent instructional practices across units and modules.
Provide kind, helpful, and specific feedback (within or across teams for Grades K-5).
Contribute to a high functioning collaborative team: honor EL’s organizational shared commitments; build relationships; proactively communicate if issues with the group or individuals arise; name milestones and celebrate successes; promote reflection and ongoing improvement.
Support schools in implementing a pilot module in Spring/Summer 2022.
As needed, carry out special projects or problem solving as assigned by the Director, Curriculum Design.
A successful candidate will have:
A master’s degree in education, specialization in teaching English Language Learners preferred
Five or more years of experience teaching English Language Learners during ELD time at the K-5 level, and/or coaching K-5 teachers to support ELLs, bilingual education programs, and/or dual language programs
Deep knowledge of ELL pedagogy as it relates to K-5 developing literacy skills and K-5 bilingual/multilingual language development
A commitment to advocating for equity and access to rich education programs focused on research-based best instructional practices for English Language Learners
A commitment to and experience advocating for diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism
Curriculum design expertise (backwards design, holding the big picture and purpose, assessment, project-based learning, addressing CCSS standards and “shifts”)
Familiarity with EL’s K-8 ELA curriculum preferred and/or familiarity with Dr. Lily Wong Fillmore’s ‘Juicy Sentences’ work
Extraordinary written and verbal communications skills (phone, email, in-person, video conference)
Ability to manage complex tasks and tight deadlines independently and proactively
A keen eye for detail and ability to triage and problem-solve
Outstanding writing and editing skills (particular to the “curriculum genre”) to be efficient, concise, sequential, and able to write and edit quickly with minimal supervision
Ability to effectively collaborate flexibly in the virtual environment while working toward a common goal
Commitment to self-reflection and a growth mindset as a member of a high-functioning team
