Schools can be a place of empowerment and healing. We don’t need to choose between supporting emotional or academic intelligence: we need to commit to both. This 2-day site seminar is designed for school leaders, school counselors, coaches, curriculum designers, and others ready to lead change. The Silverton School has improved equity and empowerment by shifting our community’s mindset about the necessity of social-emotional competency for every child. We’ve learned that compelling topics, effective lesson design, fieldwork, experts, authentic audiences, and character education are wonderful, yet not enough. To reach our most disenfranchised students and families, we believe schools must integrate SEL into all we do, not as “another layer,” but as the fiber that weaves together all these aspects of teaching and learning. We will focus on four concrete ways SEL lives and breathes in our school:
- As an integral part of expeditions and projects,
- through Nonviolent Communication,
- in Restorative Justice practices,
- and through weekly feedback structures linked to habits.
We have successfully created a learning community where our first-generation immigrants and students experiencing high adverse childhood experiences, including poverty, are accessing the academically rigorous content we offer. Your school can do it too! Join us to find out how.
