Teachers aligning their practice to the rigor required by the Common Core are expected to engage their students in regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary. In this institute, participants will experience reading closely as they grapple with complex text about a compelling Social Studies topic. In addition, participants will learn to select worthy texts for their own classrooms to meet the requirements of the Common Core. They will learn to plan workshops that help students read closely, how to effectively teach academic and domain-specific vocabulary and how to establish a positive “culture of grappling” in their classrooms. EL Education’s Language Arts curriculum serves as a resource in this institute.
